Mr. Martín, welcome to Ljubljana! What does it mean to you to be the head coach of Krim Mercator?
When I started my coaching career about 25 years ago, I was inspired by the example of Krim Mercator. I followed Krim closely, watching how they competed, won, and claimed Champions League titles. It was a club at the pinnacle of European handball, with clear goals and ambitions that truly inspired me. It is one of the few clubs – or maybe even the only one – that was at the top then and still has big goals and ambitions today. Having the opportunity to coach a club with such a rich history means a lot to me. Krim’s tradition and history convinced me to take on this role. It’s something I genuinely want to do, and it motivates me deeply.
Do the club’s high ambitions motivate you, or do they create additional pressure?
High ambitions are definitely motivating, but my first goal is not to think about the Final4 as a necessity. That must come as a consequence or result of the hard work we put in together as a team.
Ambros Martín: I know most of the team, as I’ve already coached players like Joka, Ana and Jenni.
What will your approach be to achieving such a demanding goal?
It’s important to take things step by step. Initially, I need to focus on getting to know the team, the players, and the coaching staff. Once we build solid foundations, it will be easier to reach our goals.
How well do you know the players on the current team?
I know most of the team, as I’ve already coached players like Jovanka Radičević, Ana Gros, and Jenni Gutiérrez. I’ve also faced others in Champions League matches, so I’m aware of what they can bring to the team.
What is your assessment of the team’s quality, especially considering their performances at the recent European Championship?
The fact that 14 Krim players participated in the European Championship confirms their exceptional individual quality. Of course, such a tournament brings fatigue—not only physical but also emotional—but this is just the beginning of our work. We need to prepare for the challenges ahead.
Ambros Martín: The key will be creating strong connections within the team. It’s important to take things step by step.
How will you implement your coaching philosophy within the team?
I believe we can build on the foundation laid by Dragan Adžić, whom I respect deeply. As we developed our coaching careers around the same time, I hope to use my experience to further improve the team. I’m confident we will be physically, tactically, and mentally prepared for our next game against FTC in Stožice on January 11.
What will be key to leading the team to success?
The key will be creating strong connections within the team and ensuring that every member contributes their best. It’s vital to grow together as a team, prepare for upcoming challenges, and base everything on solid foundations that we build day by day.
